CHAPTER ONE
30¢ goes a long way!
February 23, 1973, was a cold, cloudy, winter day in Newark, New Jersey.
That is the day Lavonia Harlow woke up to dried blood splattered on the walls. A split door. Broken tables. Broken liquor bottles. Bent up beer cans. Rolled up marijuana. Half-filled glasses of Vodka with LSD, and torn-down curtains. She had a piece of cotton over the cut on her nose, bloody swollen eyes, and dried blood from the bruises on her body. It was 5:30 a.m.
Lavonia was still in the torn, blue, gabardine pants, an old, beige sweater, worn-out boots with holes in the bottom, and a dingy, crème, knit hat that covered her coarse hair with dried blood. She had worn these clothes for an entire week.
Lavonia looked around the living room of her dingy apartment and thought to herself, "What happened?"
Lavonia walked slowly into the bedroom. The sheets were scattered across the mattress, and the bedspread was on the floor. Her husband, Geno, was fast asleep.
She looked over to the old, mahogany dresser drawer where she kept an old pocketbook. Inside the pocketbook there was an address book and some income tax papers. Lavonia saw the shining silver in the corner of the dresser drawer, 30¢. She just stood there and said, "Lavonia, you've been a fool for 2.5 years. It's time to run!"
